 On September 10th, 2024, former President Trump claimed in a debate with Vice President Harris that immigrants to Springfield Ohio were eating house pets. The truth is that there has been friction between the new Haitian immigrant community and long-time residents as up to 20,000 new residents have entered Springfield, Ohio over the past 4 years. These Haitians are drawn by jobs with low to no education requirements in meatpacking and manufacturing. Many of these Haitians are in the US under a Temporary Protected Status order. The initial accusation started with a Facebook post to a private Springfield, Ohio group by a resident named Erika Lee.
This post was then screenshotted by a twitter user named @buckeyegirrl who said:
This was then picked up by a Twitter account “EndWokeness” who claimed that “ducks and pets were disappearing.”
Note that it is likely that Twitter user “EndWokeness” is likely Right-Wing Activist Jack Posobiec.  The accusation was later amplified by Ohio senator and Vice Presidential Candidate JD Vance.
It is possible that during debate prep, one of former President Trump’s aids gave him incorrect information about Springfield. Pet abduction doesn’t seem to be happening in Springfield and Haitian culture does not view dogs and cats as food. Additional note: The City of Springfield resides in Clark County, Ohio. Clark County voted for President Donald Trump with 60% of the the vote in 2020. It should be noted that one claim from EndWokeness is that “Springfield, Ohio will be every town and city in America if Kamala wins.” It appears that Springfield is a Republican district, in a Republican-leaning County, in a state with a Republican Governor.
